BEAUTIFUL BAHRAIN

A spray of cool air, spiced with salt,

Washes over speeding dhows,

And brings cool to the sweltering heat.

The adept sailor looks out,

Wondering at what the day will reap:

Hordes of fish, perhaps a pearl.

His life and future based upon

The many spoils of the sea.

A stream of cool air, sweet scented,

Passes between the date palms,

And refreshes the shade beneath.

The eager student looks down,

Reading over his notes for the day:

Pages scrawled over with words.

His life and future based upon

The equations in his books.

A rush of cool air, blowing strong,

Wraps around the building tops,

And dances from cranes to concrete.

The skilled engineer looks up,

Envisioning future projects:

Mind-altering skyscrapers.

Our lives and futures based upon

The blueprints he helps design.

A breath of cool air, filled with life,

Sidles around street corners,

And waves the flags of red and white.

The lithe children look around,

Laughing cheerfully as they play:

The ball flies, the children run.

Their lives and futures based upon

Now and then, both past and present.

This is Bahrain.

Diverse, charming, bustling Bahrain.

This is Bahrain.

Delightful, colourful, beautiful Bahrain.

About Fahad

“I'm an young, aspiring writer from Australia, living in Bahrain. Writing is something I love. It is more than a hobby to me; it is something I have been doing for as long as I can remember. It is a part of my life, as natural as breathing or eating. It is my method of self-expression; my way of showing the world the content of my mind. It is my voice. I have a fascination with the interweaving of emotion and experience with written language. It is remarkable that something as simple as the alphabet, which is really just a series of arbitrary markings, can be strung together to make us experience and imagine the richest scenes and deepest emotions. Enthralled by the almost magical qualities of language, I began to write, at first as an outlet for my overflowing childhood imagination, and then as I grew older, as a medium with which I could articulate my thoughts and feelings. As Lady Murusaki wrote over a thousand years ago in the legendary Tale of Genji, 'Again and again something in one’s own life, or in that around one, will seem so important that one cannot bear to let it pass into oblivion. There must never come a time, the writer feels, when people do not know about this.' Our emotions and experiences are transient—that much is apparent. My aim as a writer is to crystallize and preserve these evanescent sensations into a form that can be experienced by all. As Ezra Pound put it, 'Literature is news that stays news.' I write both prose and poetry spanning several genres. My literary inspiration ranges from the great classical writings of Catullus, Dante, and Homer, to the more contemporary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, and Terry Pratchett. One day I hope to see my own works on a shelf beside the literary giants whom I admire, and hopefully inspire my readers, just as my own heroes have inspired me.”
